“Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases!
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
They speak idly everyone with his neighbor;
with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
“May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, and
the tongue that speaks proud things, who have said,
‘With our tongue we will prevail; our lips are our
own;
who is lord over us?’
“’For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of
the needy. Now I will arise,’ says the Lord; ‘I will
set him in the safety for which he yearns.’
“The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver
tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve
them from this generation forever.
“The wicked prowl on every side, when vileness
is exalted among the sons of men.’”
Psalm 12
(NKJV)
This psalm starts out with a
simple cry, “Help, Lord"! That has been my prayer many times when a
situation seems overwhelming and I hardly know where to begin or what to say.
Here, the psalmist decries the corrupt times he was living in and the
godless people all around him. This may seem to describe our day as well
and indeed, Jesus even asks whether He will find faith on the earth when He
comes again (Luke 18:8).
The problem is not only lack of
faith but serious matters of the heart. We can be self-centered, focusing on
our own interests. We like to think we’re self-sufficient and independent,
going our own way without consideration of God and others. Our words
often reveal that we are prideful, flatterers, deceitful and double-minded. By
contrast, God’s words are true, pure and holy. The Bible has been thoroughly
tested and purified as silver in a furnace. The Bible has been preserved
throughout the ages, despite persecution, hostile criticism and attempts to
manipulate and change it. God's word is eternal and it will stand forever.
The degeneracy of souls is
tragically seen at the end of this psalm. Wickedness abounds and
vileness is exalted, just as the Bible predicts (e.g., Matthew 24:11-12, 2
Timothy 3:13). Yet God still saves all who trust in Jesus Christ and sets them
in the safety for which they yearn (v. 5). Put your faith and trust in
Him today. Seek counsel in God’s word and cry out for His righteousness
in the midst of this lost and decaying world.
