Jesus is Worthy on this US National Day of Prayer (5/7/26)

Did you know it is the 75th US National Day of Prayer today? 

This year’s theme: GLORIFY GOD AMONG THE NATIONS - SEEKING HIM IN ALL GENERATIONS

I Chronicles 16:24        Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.

Kathy Branzell, President of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, gives background on the prayerfully selected verse and theme for this year: “In 2026, our theme is inspired by a passionate prayer of Thanksgiving, prayed by King David in 1 Chronicles 16 after bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. This chapter records Israel celebrating the return of the Ark after being separated for 70 years earlier. While God was always watching over Israel and just a prayer away from them and King David, the Ark of the Covenant represented the presence of God having been constructed at the command of God and carried by the Levites with Moses as they wandered and waited to enter the Promised Land and eventually stolen from the tabernacle in Shiloh at their defeat in the battle in Ebenezer. I’ll pause here in its history for now. Thankfully, we have an entire year to unpack 365 days or more of all the prayers and prompts we can glean from this theme.”

As a family, we try to cover one of these areas each day of the week. Sunday is Church, Monday is Families, Tuesday is Education, Wednesday is Business (and community), Thursday is Media, Friday is Military and Saturday is Government. Jesus is our Hope on this US National Day of Prayer (5/1/25)

For those in the United States, what are your plans for participating in the 74th National Day of Prayer today?

This year’s theme: Pour out to the God of HOPE and be filled

Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Guess what? The theme artwork for this year’s National Day of Prayer was done by a UK artist, Julie Ann Scott, based on passages from Revelation! Our greatest HOPE is the God of HOPE who reigns forever and will return for us.

One of the passages is Revelation 19:11-14     ¹¹ I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. ¹² His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. ¹³ He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. ¹⁴ The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.

Jesus is Truth on this US National Day of Prayer (5/2/24)

For those in the United States, what are your plans for participating in the 72^nd National Day of Prayer today?

This year’s theme: LIFT UP THE WORD - LIGHT UP THE WORLD

2 Samuel 22:29-31 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.

The world needs the light of the Lord and the truth of Jesus! Each nation needs prayer everyday. I appreciate that we continue to have a designated day of prayer in the United States (with the exact day of the first Thursday in May signed into law in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan).

Faithful God on our National Day of Prayer (5/4/23)

What are your plans for participating in the National Day of Prayer today?

 President Harry S. Truman signed it into law in 1952 that there would be a National Day of Prayer as an annual observance. This year’s theme is “Pray Fervently in Righteousness and Avail Much.” It is taken from James 5:16b The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Thursday Devotional - God is With Us on this National Day of Prayer 5/5/22

Did you know the United States has had an officially declared National Day of Prayer for 70 years (since 1952) and it’s been designated the first Thursday of May for 40 years (since 1982)???

How will you pray on this National Day of Prayer?

If you’re unsure, here is an encouraging verse. 

Romans 8:26        ²⁶ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

This is one of my favorite verses on prayer because it talks about asking the Holy Spirit to help us when we don’t know how or what to pray!

As we ask the Spirit to help us pray, we’re to pray continually about anything and everything, but length isn’t important.

Matthew 6:7-8      ⁷ And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. ⁸ Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

There is a never ending list of people and situations that need prayer, but praying for ourselves is vital daily.

Matthew 26:41     ⁴¹ “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Thursday Devotional - A Different Sunday

Well, we didn’t meet in person with our fellow church members last Sunday. We did get to watch the live stream of our pastor’s sermon, which was encouraging!

In addition, since the President declared last Sunday a National Day of Prayer, we tried to pray together as a family most hours of the day. I compiled a list of things to focus on in prayer, Scripture passages to read, and songs we could sing together. We all took turns praying first, deciding which room of the house to pray in for that prayer time and what song to sing.  

Here’s what we ended up doing for our 7 prayer sessions throughout the day:

1. Prayed for the President/VP/Governor/other officials

I Timothy 2:1-3

2. Prayed for our church, pastor, and other church leaders

Acts 20:27-31

Deep and Wide (Sarah’s pick)

3. Prayed for the health of our family

4. Prayed for our school/director/teachers/families

5. Praised God for His attributes and character

Amazing Grace

As we won’t be meeting corporately at church the next few weeks, I’ll probably plan something similar for the next few Sundays!

I Timothy 2:1-4  I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— ² for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. ³ This is good, and pleases God our Savior, ⁴ who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
