Thursday Devotional - All-Knowing God and Confused Job (8/1/24)

Pranks are done on enemies and friends. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether a prank was intended to be mean or funny. My Mom was re-telling a prank some fellow campers played on her when she was a kid (putting sand in her sleeping bag). She first thought it was kids being mean, but later realized they were teasing her as a friend.

God doesn’t play pranks. However, sometimes what we experience in life is hard to understand. It may seem like He is treating us more like an enemy than a friend. It may seem like He doesn’t care or that He is angry with us, but it usually is for a much bigger purpose. We often see and live short-sighted. 

As wise as Job was, he was still perplexed by his tragic life circumstances and physical torment. He felt like God was treating him more like an enemy than a friend. He took these complaints and questions directly to God.

Job 7:7, 11-16, 19-21  Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath;
    my eyes will never see happiness again.

¹¹ “Therefore I will not keep silent;
    I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit,
    I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
¹² Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep,
    that you put me under guard?
¹³ When I think my bed will comfort me
    and my couch will ease my complaint,
¹⁴ even then you frighten me with dreams
    and terrify me with visions,
¹⁵ so that I prefer strangling and death,
    rather than this body of mine.
¹⁶ I despise my life; I would not live forever.
    Let me alone; my days have no meaning…

¹⁹ Will you never look away from me,
    or let me alone even for an instant?
²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you,
    you who see everything we do?
Why have you made me your target?
    Have I become a burden to you?
²¹ Why do you not pardon my offenses
    and forgive my sins?
For I will soon lie down in the dust;
    you will search for me, but I will be no more.”

Job was extremely confused and asked God about it. Our All-knowing God can handle our honest complaints, questions, and confusion. He will provide His answers in His time, just as He did for Job (at the end of the book in chapters 38-42).

We may wonder if God is listening, what good He could possibly bring from a terrible situation or why He doesn’t step in and address evil. The next time you and I are confused, let’s respectfully take our questions to God. We can look to the All-knowing God and His Word for answers or direction in the waiting.

Thursday Devotional - All-Knowing God versus Wrong Satan (6/20/24)

Have you ever been right and your enemy wrong?? Did they come back and admit they were wrong and you were right?

Satan didn’t admit to God that God was right about Job. As we saw last week, Job didn’t curse God when everything he had was stripped away. Satan said he would, but he didn’t. This week, we’ll see Satan try again to prove God wrong.

 

Job 2:3-10 ³ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

⁴ “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. ⁵ But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

⁶ The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”

⁷ So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. ⁸ Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

⁹ His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

¹⁰ He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

Satan lost again! Job didn’t curse God, even after his wife encouraged him to do the very thing Satan wanted.

Only God is all-knowing, omniscient, and always right! I had to admit to Edmund (our 7 year-old) yesterday that I was wrong. It was related to something we read in Job 7 that I had mis-remembered. We read it again and he was right and I was wrong.

Numerous truths and applications pop out of this section of Job. This time reading through it, though, the contrast between God and Satan really stood out.

It’s usually hard to admit when we are wrong. However, I would rather not be like Satan. The next time you and I are wrong, let’s be quick to admit it to ourselves, those around us and especially to God. He already knows, as our all-knowing God, so why not acknowledge it before Him?

Thursday Devotional - Faithful God through an Enemy Ruler (3/23/23)

Remember where Naaman was from? He was a ruler for the enemy king of Aram!!! Look how our Faithful God worked in his life to not only heal him physically, but spiritually!

II Kings 5:17-19      ¹⁷ “If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. ¹⁸ But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I have to bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”

¹⁹ “Go in peace,” Elisha said.

Naaman wasn’t just grateful he was healed; he had a complete heart change. He met the true God and wanted to live for and worship only Him! As a result, God used Naaman to take back to his country evidence of who the True and Living God is! It will be exciting to see in heaven who all Naaman influenced in “enemy” territory.

Like Naaman, how has meeting God motivated you and me to live for and worship only Him? Where might He want to use you and me to influence others, even in “enemy” territory?

Thursday Devotional: God of Grace – To the Enemy? 7/28/2022

Who do you think is the most vicious human enemy of Christians today? I don’t know that I can narrow it down to one person, but maybe several individuals who are quite vocal today.

Have you ever thought about what might happen if God graciously turned their entire worldview around?

God graciously changed Paul, one of the most vicious and zealous persecutors of Christians in his day.

I Timothy 1:14-17 ¹⁴ The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

¹⁵ Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. ¹⁶ But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. ¹⁷ Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

You and I can pray for God to graciously convert those who are persecuting (directly or indirectly) His followers. Even our enemies aren’t beyond God’s grace!

You Will Win!

God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming his entire message to you.  This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God’s people.  For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.

So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect[g] in their relationship to Christ.  That’s why I work and struggle so hard, depending on Christ’s mighty power that works within me.  1 Colossians 1:25-29

At Sunday service, my pastor challenged the congregation with something that seems simple but was one of those ‘you really don’t know what you are getting into until you are actually into it’ moments.  He asked us that when facing trouble with a person to pray, “God, help me to represent you well today.”  It sounds easy enough, and when you say it, there is a level of both calm and confidence that comes with it.  However once we get to that situation, we struggle with the infamous hijacker of many of our faith based ambitions known as ‘That Person in the Mirror.’  As one of my favorite contemporary Christian songs says, “Left to myself, I realize I am the maker of my own demise.”  My fears, reservations, and doubts slowly creep in and try to dig in their heels.  Before I know it, I am in the midst of the storm.  Keep in mind this is the storm before the actual storm.  Is it any wonder that we fail before the fight has begun?  It’s not that our faith is not strong.  However, we are already battle weary such that when the real storm hits, we are unable to fight anymore.  So how do we prepare to win the battle?  How can we combat an enemy that is as great as we are because in essence, the enemy is us?

The key to victory is not realizing Christ is not only just with you but also within you.  Today’s verses provide encouragement to the battle weary reminding them that though the work and struggle may be hard, we are assured of glory in Heaven through Christ.  Our past struggles and transgressions may tell us we are not deserving of such love, grace, and power.  But if Christ is within us, we know with certainty and assurance as written in Romans 8:37 that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”  We all go through stretches where we are battle tested but often battle weary.  No one does well having to constantly fight for if you are constantly fighting everyone and everything, your hands are always clenched and closed.  However to receive God’s love and mercy our hands must be up and open.  God wants us to open our hearts to Him, and through Him, we will find a reserve that is liken to God Himself; omnipotent/all powerful!

We can always see victory if our perspective is Christ-like.  Yes, there are times we will not see the end of our suffering, but we must have confidence that God is not only with us but within us.  We can answer the enemies of self-doubt and fear with the words of David saying, “The Lord is my light and salvation – whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1a – NIV).  What fears and doubts have settled in to your mind that God can remove today?  How can you remember to recall God’s strength in you when you are battle weary?  My prayer is that when you are weary from the battle, remember God is both with and within you.  You will win!  Amen.

Giving All of Us

Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “If you want to return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the Lord and obey him alone; then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”  So the Israelites got rid of their images of Baal and Ashtoreth and worshiped only the Lord.  1 Samuel 7:3-4

Do I serve God with my head or heart?  This is a constant in my mind because there are times that the head and heart are not on the same page.  For example when dealing with my own sin, it would appear that the head (i.e. reading God’s scripture and taking it to ‘heart’) should win the day.  Yet when dealing with others in their brokenness of their own sins, having a heart and being compassionate is the right thing to do.  I have found that I best serve God with my head as the guiding force but my heart as the driving force.  You see, we cannot serve God just one way or the other.  He wants every bit of us to serve Him.  Only then will we be able to have a growing Christian walk.

Serving God must be done fully and completely.  I was fascinated with the story of Samuel in doing this devotion not only for the verses above but also the build up to this moment.  Samuel was called on directly by God to serve, but first, the stage had to be set for God’s truth to be revealed through Samuel.  God allowed Israel to be defeated by the Philistines and lose the Ark of Covenant of the Lord in that battle.  If you do not understand the significance of this, imagine doing the thing that you do better than anything else, and on your best day, you still were not as good as someone else.  Pretty devastating!  However, God was just prepping the stage by later causing all kinds of grief and suffering for the Philistines while Samuel was being elevated to his leadership role.  Thus when Samuel spoke to Israel asking for them to give everything to God; hearts, turning away from false idols, and obeying God alone, they were ready to listen to everything he had to say, and the Israelites gave everything to God.  As such, the Philistines would attack yet again, but this time they were defeated as God was with the now faithful Israelites.

In our lives, we will have situations that may not go our way.  These are opportunities to pause and reflect on whether we are fully vested in the God we serve; mind, heart, and soul.  If we are, we know He is setting the stage for our future triumph as He is faithful and without fail.  Do not focus on those things you do not control or enemies who have seemingly incredible odds stacked in their favor.  Focus on being completely vested in an awesome and amazing God.  Are there parts of you that are not completely vested in what God wants for your life?  How can you respond to situations with both heart and mind toward God?  My prayer is that we are giving all of us to God today.  Amen. 

Fighting With God (It's Not What You Think)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Ephesians 6:10-12

The other day, a couple colleagues of mine were telling me their disappointing Christian experiences.  One pointed out that there were relatives who would blast non-believers for their choice and then act in ways that were as sinful as anyone else.  Another who was distant from the faith because of its treatment toward gays asked how a faith could speak of love and yet be so dismissive of the LGBT community?  I wrote about being a Road Warriors for Christ a few weeks ago.  It was clear that this was a road game in a hostile environment.  Yet somehow, God was with me in that discussion because I answered in a way I had not done before.

Speaking to the friend with troubling relatives, I noted that some Christians are hypocritical of others, and that was wrong.  However, it is not fair for them to paint all Christians that way.  Furthermore, one must make their decision on faith based on their own relationship with God and not how others portray that relationship.  Then to the gay advocate, I simply said it is true that God’s word is clear against the homosexual lifestyle.  Furthermore I admitted it is something I struggle with because there are great people I know who are gay.  My goal as a Christian was never to judge.  It is to point them to God so their relationship can be determined.  Most of all, I am to love them with all of my heart as I would love God.  I could see that speaking from my heart had somewhat softened theirs because they knew what I was saying was not the hate filled overly critical views they had heard from Christians before.  It was a flawed and loving person who was helping them see the God they might not have agreed with but could understand.

Allowing God to shine through us is the best way to handle any conversation challenging our faith.  It is never easy when we are attacked at times in vicious and unacceptable ways.  However Hebrews 6:10 reminds us, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”  Trust that He will be with you in your most difficult battles.  How can you rely on God when questioned about your faith?  My prayer is that instead of fighting against God, we address our opposition fighting back with God.  Amen.

Speaking to the Enemy

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’  But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.  And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”  Matthew 5:38-42

I had someone in my life that one might call an 'enemy.'  As in most cases, this person is someone who you befriend and do all you can to help them.  Then at some point, they do something that is not at all like a friend.  Being honest, there are times it still bothers me. To  give so much only to have them tear you down behind your back is disheartening.  There has never been an opportunity for me to say anything to them since finding out this was happening, but if it does, what would I say?  More importantly, what should I say?

God’s gift of grace is a shining example of how we are to give grace to others.  When I read these verses as a young child, I took it to mean to avoid fighting when possible.  Today, I realize that was a narrow view of them.  Jesus’ point here is for us to be bigger than the transgressions against us.  It is about showing the face of God to one who may have never seen what true grace is. Thus when the pain seems unbearable or anger is greater than we can handle, Jesus encourages us through His teachings that we can indeed be above all of it.

Jesus always speaks the truth!  When the moment of conflict comes and every fiber in us says to react with either anger or vengeance, focus on Jesus for guidance.  Not only will He give you peace but He will also give you the victory in the end for as He teaches us in prayer:

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors (Matthew 6:12)

What emotional scar can you give to God today?  Who can you show grace toward as God has to you?  My prayer is that we can trust Jesus to take away pain and replace it with His love when speaking to the enemy.  Amen.
