Hearing the Truth

Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. John 18:37 (NASB)

When I was growing up, friends use to marvel at how my brother and I could hear my father’s voice from anywhere in the house.  To give some clarity as to why this was a marvel, this home was built in the early 1900’s with steel, plaster, brick, and wood; a wireless network’s worst nightmare.  Yet even though we were on the opposite end of the house, my Dad, with a mild voice, would simply say, “Uh, Kent,” and I’d come running.  I could always hear his voice.  Although my father passed away almost seven years ago, I can still hear him reminding me to stay focused on those lessons he taught me.

If we are focused on Jesus Christ, we will consistently hear His voice.  Many people believe they hear God’s voice when they are in trouble or in the midst of their darkest hours.  In some cases, these represent the very first time they hear it.  However if we are continually living a Christ centered life, we would hear Him at all times.  When something goes well or we are successful, we hear God understanding that all the glory goes to Him.  When we use our gifts for the greater good or in service of others, we are hearing God’s call to serve.  When we meditate on God’s word consistently, we hear God’s voice for direction.  God is all around us, and our sense of His presence is a clear sign of our spiritual growth.

Jesus Christ died, and rose from the dead.  We don’t just know it and feel it.  We hear it in our heart and spirit.  One need not see the resurrection to know that it happened, and one need not see Christ to know that He has risen.  This and He is the truth.  As one of my favorite movie lines says, “Those are the facts, and they are indisputable.”  How can you stand on this truth when challenged?  How will you stay attune to the voice of Christ?  My prayer is that we always hear Jesus; the truth.  Amen.
